Orphans and Vulnerable Children

In February 2007, in response to an advertisement in the daily Graphic by the Ghana Aids Commission calling for proposals on the implementation of a multi-sectoral HIV and AIDS programme, a proposal was submitted by the FSDA to the commission through the district assembly of Dangme West District in the Greater Accra Region for consideration.


FSDA was among the three NGO'S which were selected for the funding for the implementation of the multi-sectoral HIV and AIDS programme in the district.

The intervention areas under the programme were treatment, Care and support, mitigating social, cultural, legal and economic impacts. The target populations were Orphans and Venerable Children, Youth In and Out of School and community members.


The objectives of the project were to ensure improved positive attitudes and supportive social and legal environment for PLWHA'S and OVC'S and affected family members and to organize activities designed to reduce the economic impacts of HIV and AIDS on infected and affected households, OVC'S and other vulnerable people. To that end, FSDA identified 35 vulnerable children and 35 caregivers at Agomeda.


The Activities undertaken under the project included:

1.     The registration of OVC and their caregivers with the National Health Insurance Scheme and the payment of their insurance premiums.


2.     Presentation of school books and stationery kit, school uniforms and bags to the Orphans and Vulnerable Children in the community; the presentation was attended by the Executive Director of FSDA, the District HIV and AIDS Focal Persons, Staff from Community Development Department of the District Assembly, a member of the local monitoring group, the deputy head teacher of the junior secondary school and the caregivers of the selected OVC.


3.     Organization of counseling sessions and monitoring of the OVC's in the school and homes; caregivers of OVC's were trained in thee psychosocial counseling and home-based care.


4.     Workshop on Education of the community on the reduction and elimination of stigma and discrimination against person living with HIV and AIDS and Orphans and Vulnerable Children in the community.
